I admit I'm going to lose a fair amount of respect for John McCain if he chooses as his running mate someone whose primary qualifications are in religion rather than economics.

McCain has already admitted that economics is not his strong suit, and if concerns about the economy have eclipsed concerns even about Iraq or terrorism for most Americans, then my guess is they've also eclipsed concerns about pornography or flag burning or school prayer.

Personally, I feel that McCain's choice of running mate will reveal whether he's really following his own vision of what America needs the most, or whether he's instead following outdated (and I think cynical) playbooks from earlier years.
