East Village

With the exception of Chelsea (which I'm planning to see tomorrow) I think I've now spent at least a little time in each of Manhattan's neighborhoods.

Obviously, the Columbia University campus is beautiful and it's a fine school, but since their campus doesn't constitute a neighborhood unto itself, I'd have to say that East Village is far and away my favorite neighborhood so far. It has a good range of restaurants from inexpensive to moderately expensive, it has a vibrant arts scene (which seems to enjoy community rather than tourist patronage), and the locals seem bright, idealistic, and excited about life. They also seem to get out and enjoy their neighborhood more than folks tend to in the Upper West Side.

Basically, East Village matches my preconception of what New York City as a whole would be like.
