"The Mountain" by Balthus

Only one of the people in this painting sees another, but the one being seen seems to have adopted a certain majesty by stepping into the sunlight and serving as the other half of the mountain. I choose to see this as a naturalistic response to David's "The Oath of the Horatii."

I'm sure that's not what Balthus himself would have said, but hey, what's he gonna do about it?
