The Federalist Papers

So, I've started reading The Federalist Papers (the collection of essays written by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay explaining the reasoning behind our nation's proposed constitution and urging its ratification).

What I'm left with is a feeling of amazement that these essays, with all their length and complexity, were intended for the general public to read. And, that the general public actually read them, and that this made a difference.

I just can't imagine anything even remotely like that working today.
