On a lighter note...

I've been thinking today about whether there's an iron law of happiness, akin to the iron law of supply and demand in economics.

If there is, and assuming we're talking about a free society that has its basic needs for things like clean water met, I think that rule could be this: that happiness rests on accepting you can't change the past.

Maybe the way to think of life is that it's chiseling your story into some huge blank obelisk: if (like everyone else) you make a mistake, or a typo, then no amount of regret can erase what you wrote. The only way to improve anything is through whatever you write next.
