Religious beliefs of the first U.S. presidents

I've been doing a little more reading about John Adams (thanks to that amazing HBO miniseries still in progress), and was surprised to learn how many early U.S. presidents were in practice either Unitarian or Deist. Both John Adams and John Quincy Adams attended Unitarian churches, for example, Thomas Jefferson appears to have been theologically Unitarian even though it was not possible for him to attend a Unitarian church, and according to two of his closest friends Abraham Lincoln was in practice either deist or atheist.

I guess the point is that these were towering figures in our nation's history, but if they ran for office today one could easily imagine their campaigns derailing (for "not being Christian enough") if their personal religious beliefs became public knowledge.
