A difficult question about presidential history

I know that several of the folks following this trip journal are history buffs, including at least one with a degree in history. So, here's the question: if John McCain is elected president, will he be the first U.S. president to have been a victim of torture? If not, then who were the others, and what were the circumstances?

As a related question, has there ever been a time in U.S. history when our own wartime prisoner interrogation practices have faced the same level of international attention as they are now? If yes, what was the conflict and what were the circumstances?

Frankly, it would be a remarkable coincidence if during the first conflict where our own torture of prisoners has taken center stage, we elect the first U.S. president to have himself been a victim of torture during a conflict.
