The Moon and Mars

When I see the moon, what typically passes through my mind (if anything does) isn't "Oh how pretty," but rather "Wow, human beings once stood on that."

I'm in favor of sending a manned mission to Mars, and not just so that I can look at Mars and think the same thing, or even for the more nebulous reason that it's "the next thing." Rather, I'm in favor of it because it's a baby step toward the one thing our species could do that would redeem every other mistake: permanently spreading life beyond this planet.

I believe our species should consider that its purpose.
