I think the critical question is how likely your act of self defense would be to harm uninvolved bystanders. And, this suggests to me that the things to focus on are the bullets as much as the guns, together with the nature of the residence where both will be kept. Put bluntly, I think if you live in an apartment complex, condo, or anything similar, that loading a home defense firearm with any kind of ammo which could pierce the walls of your residence and hit someone in a neighboring residence is just inexcusable: whatever problem you are having is nothing your neighbors deserve to die over.
