For the ride from Marathon to Comstock TX, I'm finding myself wondering if there is a post office on the route near the 70 mile mark. If so, then maybe I could mail myself a box of water bottles and food there via general delivery. I make it to the post office before it closes (starting out pre-dawn if necessary), pick up the bundle and discard any trash, then set up my tent for the night somewhere nearby.
I'd really like to find some way to deal with the finger numbness that kicks in for high mileage routes with hills. It's not a big deal, and it's always temporary, but it would make setting up a tent a challenge after the ride.
The weather down here seems so perfect at night that I'm questioning the need for a tent. If the weather reports predict rain I could switch to arranging a motel stay for that night, but otherwise it seems a compressible down sleeping bag, a four season sleeping pad, a balaclava, and a bug headnet, should together do the trick. The sleeping pad could be strapped to the top of the rear rack, and the sleeping bag could go in my hydration pack if nothing else, so I wouldn't even need the second rear pannier. I dunno, it just seems like if I'm sleeping under the stars then I should actually be sleeping under the stars.
