A convenience store with a fireplace...

I've had 3/4 of an inch of rain so far, with high winds and poor visibility. Snow is possible above 4000 feet, but my route only brushes that elevation briefly. However, the deal-breaker in terms of making it to Jacumba tonight was realizing that it's Superbowl Sunday, and hence an elevated risk of bad driving. So, I've made reservations at a motel in Pine Valley, midway between Alpine and Jacumba: they're only a few miles away at this point.

So far all my waterproof gear is working well, but I'm going to pick up waterproof or waterproof-breathable full-finger gloves at my next opportunity: it's not so much the cold as the sogginess that's bugging me.

The downpour continues...

The high winds have finally died down, but the rain continues. I was off the road by the start of the Superbowl, but due to the weather the region my motel is in has had three power outages so far. I'm just under 4000 feet, which is higher than anything I'll see until well after Pheonix, and it also doesn't look like there's anything steeper until after Pheonix.

Oh yeah...

For the sake of anyone tracking my progress, the convenience store with the fireplace (and nice proprietor with friendly dog) was the Descano Trading Post, and I'm now at the Pine Valley Inn.

The reason you're seeing typos :)

I'm making these posts from my cell phone, which has only a tiny keyboard. Furthermore, I can't see typed text any more than 50 characters behind the current cursor position. Plus, there's no spell check, or ability to edit posts once I make them.

So, please accept my apologies for any typos or awkward phrases you may notice in this trip journal. Given the circumstances, they're hard to avoid :)
