Best American Essays 2011 and Best American Science and Nature Writing 2011. I just finished reading |
In my opinion, the two best essays from these collections were "The Topic of Cancer" by Christopher Hitchens (from the former) and "Sign Here if You Exist" by Jill Sisson Quinn (from the latter).
Ms. Quinn's piece was a particular delight: insightful, lyrical, and well worth multiple reads.
[Note: For what it's worth, I've found these "Best American" collections make great general-purpose gifts - they're reasonably priced ($9 each), they come out late enough in the year that it's unlikely the recipient has already read them, much of the writing is stellar, and since the included writers represent a variety of different viewpoints there's your gift can seem like an attempt to proselytize.]
