On page 183 of Borkowski's Textbook on Roman Law (3rd ed.):

"Animals with the `habit of returning' (animus revertendi) ceased to be owned only when they abandoned the habit, i.e. lost their instinct to return. This rule was not one of the most profound Roman contributions to legal science."
