If the monument which ends the TransAmerica Trail (memorializing the surrender of General Cornwallis to General Washington, and hence as a practical matter the successful end of our Revolutionary War) signifies the end of British colonialism in America, Jamestown marks its beginning.
Jamestown was the first permanent British settlement in America, founded in 1607. This picture and the ones which follow were taken within the boundaries of the original Fort James, i.e. the point of original settlement from which the population expanded outward.
