Funny story from that Oregon Courthouses book...

The story (on page 187) concerned the courthouse I was just in, at a time when its first floor also served as the jail:

"During Prohibition, Crook County Sheriff Stephen Yancey arrested several prominent bootleggers, but was puzzled why 'moonshine' was still easily available. He later discovered that the bootleggers had whittled a wooden key out of a broom handle, and after everyone went home for the night, would let themselves out, then lock themselves up again early in the morning."
