A modern-day parable

The current caretakers of Camp Colton own a very friendly and good-natured dog, as shown here. It trotted along with me, enthusiastically, for my entire walk around the camp. Before driving away, realizing I'd probably never have cause to come here again, I thought it might be nice to have one last wholesome, all-American experience: playing fetch with the dog.

So I picked up a stick, after which the dog perked up and started expectantly wagging its tail.

So far, so good.

I threw the stick, and the dog, in an ecstasy of tail wagging and barking, ran out to grab the stick I'd just thrown. All systems go.

Then, rather than running back to me with the stick, the dog ran off into the distance with it.

I'm honestly not sure what lesson I should take from that.
